Lagoa Do Fogo
Lagoa do Fogo is one of the largest lakes in the Azores and the second largest on the island of São Miguel, and has been classified since 1974 as a natural reserve.
The Fogo volcano forms the large volcanic massif of the Serra de Água de Pau, located in the central area of the island of São Miguel. This entire area is surrounded by dense and exuberant endemic vegetation.
The volcanic caldera, like the volcano that gave it shape, is the youngest on the island of São Miguel and will have formed around 15,000 years ago. Its current configuration is the result of the last collapse, considered important and that occurred at the top of the volcano, approximately 5,000 years ago. The last eruption dates back to 1563.
This lagoon is also the highest on the island of São Miguel, a fact that must be found on top of a mountain whose highest point rises to 947 meters. It is located on top of the great Fogo volcano, also known as the Água de Pau volcano. The caldera has a collapsed shape, an elliptical shape and dimensions of approximately 3 x 2.5 km. The walls of this boiler reach heights of 300 meters.
